About the artist.

I have been painting since I was a child when I would go on sketching trips to castles, churches, and other old buildings, with my father, an architect, and an elder cousin who was an established painter.

From these early influences I had the option to do painting at art college but opted instead to study architecture.  Since graduating in 1972 I have followed a career in architecture, working in my own practise in Bath since the 1980s.  Although painting has always been part of my life I have only recently exhibited my work.

Initially two paintings were exhibited at the Bath Society of Artists Exhibition 2009 where 'The Empire Hotel' was awarded the watercolour prize.  In October my painting of 'Hedgemead Park' was the winner of the first ever Bath Prize competition.  I also exhibited two of my paintings in the Royal West of England Academy's Autumn Exhibition in Bristol and one in the RWA's follow-up 'Encore' exhibition in December.

About the paintings.

Most of the pictures are watercolours but some are oil paintings with some acrylics and mixed media. The buildings of Bath are the main subject of most of the paintings. Bath is set in a bowl surrounded by hills, so random clusters of chimneys, roofs and parapets are visible and are as important to the character of Bath as the formal crescents.

My background in architecture and knowledge of Bath's Georgian buildings is evident by the wealth of architectural detail normally absent from modern paintings.  In amoungst all this detail every painting contains a black cat.

Strong shadows cast over the complementary colours of slate and stone and climpses of cool green parks behind red clay roofs are natural devises needing little adjustment to express light and space in a painting.
